In his book, The 16 Undeniable Laws of Communication, John Maxwell said, “Most people have good intentions, but many don’t take action, and that inaction often leads to regret.”
Do you ever experience regret over actions not taken? Do you ever set a goal and fail to take the steps necessary to achieve it?
As leaders, it can be easy to set big goals. Goals that match your vision, goals to help lead your team or organization to success. Sometimes, striving towards those goals becomes an overwhelming task. The key is to break them down into smaller steps. Taking baby steps may not seem like much, but it can be the difference between achieving that big goal and giving up in frustration.
When you can look at your goal and ask yourself, “What is one step I can take today that will move me toward that goal?” Mark Twain said, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”
I want to encourage you today to embrace action by taking baby steps.
1. Define your goal. Be clear about what you want to achieve. Write it down and make sure it is specific and measurable.
2. Create a plan. Break your goal down into smaller, achievable steps. Write each step down, along with a timeline for completion.
3. Take action. Start with the first step, even if it isn’t perfect, and keep going. One step at a time. This will build momentum and keep you moving forward.
4. Monitor progress. Celebrate each small victory along the way, learn from your mistakes, and course correct as you go.
When you take baby steps towards your goal, it will reduce stress, build momentum and confidence, allow for adjustments, and keep you focused. It will help you avoid procrastination, overcome analysis paralysis, and adapt to change.
What step do you need to take today to achieve your goals? Turn your intention into action and take that step today!
